OK, so I may have been a little too excited when I said we would be in our new location by the 1st of January. We are emptying out the showroom and warehouse as I type...well, I guess John is really doing that,
and will be 100% moved into our Lansdale location by February 1st.

Here is a picture of my new office space. I know too most the office is not that important, but to someone who has never has an office all her own, this space is VERY exciting for me. A am currently painting the walls in the hallway, and switching out some light fixtures. The showroom space is a clean slate. I am working on designing new displays for the areas. I will be bringing a few pieces from the existing showroom, but I am so exited about the new designs and new space options. If there is anything you would like to see in the new showroom, PLEASE let me know. Making your clients confident with their remodel is my goal.

Office Space:

I know change is always a concern, but I can assure you I am going to be taking all of my clients work ethics with us as we move, and I look forward to working with you at our new location. Just as when we moved to our current location, it was a smooth transition that allowed us to make changes and spark our creative sides again. I am looking forward to this new chapter of HD Kitchens, and I look forward to seeing you and your clients in our new space!

Good work ain't cheap

As long as all cabinetry is maintained well and treated fairly, it should be in a home for years to come. Right now, it seems if you don't like something, you throw it away and get an new one, if that one breaks, you don't fix it, you get a new one. In most instances fixing things cost equal or more than getting a new one, so who can blame them? This is not true for cabinetry. Cabinetry should last and last, so investing in quality pays of in the long run.

I saw this picture and HAD to post it...

...you get what you pay for.

"You get what you pay for means” that if you purchase something for dirt cheap, don’t be surprised if you receive an inferior product or service. In a nutshell, the more you pay for something, in general that person will be more satisfied with the purchase.

Clients often tend to think that the less expensive route will be fine for now, but in 5 years when the cabinetry needs to be replaced because of BASIC wear and tear, that $1,000 savings doesn't really seem like that great a deal. Make sure your clients are educated on cabinetry. Quality matters, and if they aren't comparing apples to apples, they are doing a dis-service to themselves as well as the contractor.

Point Pleasant Designer House 2011

This is an 1800's Canal Home being recreated by DMB Design Associates (kitchen design by HD Kitchens) and 11 other designers in the Bucks County Area.

You get what you pay for.

As any contractor knows, there are a reasons that some kitchen cabinetry costs $50,000 and some cost $5,000.

If your client is looking at the same space and the same layout, and the price is drastically different, tell them to ask WHY? Most clients get so involved with the bottom line, that they lose focus of what the WANT in the space. If they expect perfection, they have to pay for it. Explain to them that they are not going to get a flawless furniture finish for a builder grade cabinet price. Most cabinet manufacturers build a variety of cabinets all to hit a variety of price points. If your client needs to shave a couple thousand off the bottom line, make sure they are okay with shaving some options and quality off the cabinets themselves. Make sure they know what they are going to receive. The last thing you as a contractor want when the cabinets arrive at your door, is the hear that the client didn't think this or that was going to be that way.

Like I said, I still haven't found a great way to say it but the old adage is true...You do get what you pay for.
As long as your client knows that they are getting less expensive cabinetry can be a great way to go, but make sure that if they are expecting the quality of the more expensive priced kitchen, at the lower cost, they are probably going to be dissapointed.

So, what do you think?

Every one has been there. Someone asks you what you think of something, and your thoughts run to..."Do you really want me to tell you"? I get this a lot with kitchens. The worst feeling as a designer is to see a space that has newly been done (by someone other than ourselves, obviously), and just see the glaring issues, the things you would have done differently.

As a customer, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! This is a space that YOU have live in, take the time to research who you are working with. Putting your home in the hands of contractors is a huge compliment to the people chosen. Make sure they deserve it. I realize that you are not expected to know every nuance of kitchen design, but spend sometime thinking about what you want. A designer or contractor can go over EVERY aspect of design that they can think of, but if you never told them you were looking for a space for your paper towel roll, you can't blame them for not bringing it up. Think about your space, so you don't end up with these LITTLE issues that so easily could have been avoided...

(1) TRASHY TRASH CANS: I realize that 18" of space in some kitchens is just too much to give up, but if your space can afford a 6 to7 foot island, HIDE THE TRASH...

The last thing you want people to see after spending thousands of dollars on a new kitchen is the trash can. After all, you can dress it up, but the trash is still the trash.

(2) CROWN CATASTROPHE: Watch the height of the crown. If you decided to leave a space above your cabinetry for that open look, make sure you have 9"-12" minimum to do so. Don't leave 1" of space between you cabinets and your ceiling. It just looks like you didn't have enough material so you fudged it.

Think about it...what is going to happen to that space? It is going to collect dust, and be next to impossible to clean. Take the cabinetry to the ceiling for a more finished look that will save aggravation in the long run.

(3) END PANEL ENVY: Of all of these, this has to be my biggest pet-peeve. Refrigerator end panels. The simplest and most cost effective way to get a custom kitchen look is by adding these puppies. 2 panels do not add much to the cost of your cabinetry (under $500), but the make a HUGE difference. If you look at the picture above, although the crown is disturbing the fridge itself is finished, built-in, and classy. The same can not be said here...

To me this stands out like a sore thumb. Panels just complete the look. They give the counter-tops somewhere to end, and the make the cabinet above the fridge FUNCTIONAL...I mean who can reach that cabient the way it sits in this picture?

This post might explain why I am seldom invited to peoples homes, but I guess that what happens when you don't get me to do your kitchen ;).

The new "Best Thing"

I have been telling clients about this option for year now, but apparently I was ahead of the curve. The new interior cabinet item that is "all the rage" according to kitchen accessory experts is the... trash can cabinet!

If you are saying huh?, than I am happy to know I still have your interest. Clients have been installing MULTIPLE trash can units in kitchen spaces to allow for DOG FOOD STORAGE! This easy and relatively inexpensive idea is helping clients to get rid of the large unsightly dog food storage units, or the 1/2 full bag laying around in the house or garage.

Pets are a HUGE part of clients lives, account for the need of pets is a market that is only expanding. The next time you are in your clients house, and you see pets, ask if the need of the pet need to imcorported into the kitchen design. It has been something I have added to my list or questions, and you would be amazed at the positive response to such a simple question.

A team of Interior Designers and a Landscape Designer have been selected to transform this 1800’s canal home. Every space in the home is recreated by a different interior design company. What is an appointment all about?

A lot of your customers ask me how long an appointment is going to take and what is involved in an appointment. For those of you who have not met with your client up at the showroom, here is a quick overview of what goes on at a standard first appointment.

In most cases, your client will give us a call to schedule a time to come in. During the initial phone call, they are asked if they have any ideas or pictures of what they are thinking about for their remodel. If they do, I ask them to bring them with them, so I can see what they are thinking. Sometimes my Shaker door is their transitional one.

Once your client arrives, they are first welcomed into the showroom and given a little information about HD Kitchens & Baths. I ask them if they found us ok, and if the drive up was fun. I then like to open the appointment up for questions. Many clients have a list of concerns before they start the project, and some have not one question...this is sometimes more worrisome to me than 100 questions being thrown at me. The most common question we are asked, is how long we have been working with their contractor & have we seen your work. Happily, we have worked with many or our clients for years now, and seen your work up close and personal. One of the lucky things that we feel about the size of our company is that we get to work with customers that are great at what they do and proud of their work.

A tricky question that I like to find out before we pick a cabinet line is BUDGET. To most clients telling me this is not an option. They feel as though if they tell me what they are thinking, I am going to take them either right to the line, or right over it. For your knowledge, this is NOT why I ask. We have 4-6 cabinets lines available to your client, ranging anywhere from builders grade to full custom. In order for you to compete with the slew of bids that clients are getting these days before starting a project (and they all are), I like to know what they are looking at elsewhere. I don't want to undersell them, but I don't want to blow them out of the water with the price of a kitchen that puts the project on permanent hold. Budget is always a tricky question, but I have my ways to figure it out, and MOST of the time by the time the customer leaves, they are comfortable to let me know around where they would like to be.

Depending on what they have shown me, or what I sense are the target issues, we will either go through internal items or style and color. I will try to go through all the internal items that they NEED vs. what they want. In most cases, I tell your client to pick out everything they would want in their dream kitchen. Obviously, I like to keep space restraints in mind. Even if a client wants an 8' island, if the kitchen in only 6' long, it isn't going to work. Keeping that in mind, I like to price out the kitchen with all the important items included. If it ends up being over the clients budget, we can go back to the list of "wants", and start organizing them into what is a true desire, and what would be nice to have. With a budget in mind, most clients can do this with no problem. After all the fun stuff is finished, I always end the appointment with another round of questions. Was there anything that they saw or wanted that we did not go over?...that is a big one for me.

All clients are given literature on the cabinet style and color they chose, as well as a brochure about HD Kitchens & Baths, and my card. I then tell them that I am only a phone call away, and if they see anything in the literature that we have not gone over, or that interests them, to call me directly. In order to keep you busy bidding and building, I tell them that any questions can be posed to me directly rather than having to call you and then have you call me. I thank them for coming in and wish them a safe trip home and a great week/weekend.

At this point, most of you are familiar with the process. I will take the clients list or desires, and incorporate it into a functional kitchen space. This layout is then e-mailed or faxed to you along with a a cabinet list and quote. I like to give myself 1 week for this process. It has been 2-3 weeks in the past, and it has been 2-3 days in the past as well, but on an average, 1 week is what I shoot for.

All in all, that is the quick overview of an appointment. The average initial kitchen appointment takes anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2 hours on average, with anywhere from 15-45 minutes in calls the next day.

In all this, our goal is to make the client comfortable with our company as well as yours. We also strive to make your time more functional as well. You don't need to be answering questions that we can answer especially if by us answering one or two quick questions, you can get more work.

Undergoing any renovation in your home is a daunting task, and clients really need to feel secure in the contractors they use. I hope that we as a company help do that for both you and you client.

Movie Kitchens

It's Complicated - Universal Pictures

OK, so what do you see when you look at this picture? A cute scene from the movie "It's Complicated", right?. I think that is what most people would see, but me being me, I am looking past the enormously talented actors into the kitchen. I am looking at counter-top material, lighting, cabinet color, shape, style, paint color, fabrics...every detail that makes this kitchen not only work for the movie, but work in real life as well. Would I do this, would that really function well, or does it only work to look good?

Picking this "still" apart, I begin to realize why I am often kept out of my friends kitchens.

I don't do this to every kitchen though...do I?

Trend: (Holiday) Luxury

With the holidays right around the corner, adding touches of luxury to your holiday decor is a fun and easy way to make your home feel like a five star hotel. After all, glamour is not a trend, it is something that is always in style.

Focus your efforts on smaller areas like powder rooms or dry bars. Use reflective surfaces to bounce light and create an illuminated atmosphere. Formal eating spaces like dining rooms always work for a more sophisticated look. Layer fabrics or use fabrics with lots of texture to create a glamorous feel.

Keep in mind, that not everything that shimmers in glamorous. Focus your attention on items in the silvers or gunmetals. Iridescent tiles, mother of pearl, velvet fabrics, whites and purples create powerful statements when used together. Even something as simple as a glass of champagne can add glamour to a space.

Whatever you choose to add, just don't over do it. Pick and choose what will work best in your home, and stick too it. Adding too much of a good thing can be...well, too much of a good thing!!!

It is hard to believe that the Holiday season is approaching. It seems no matter what you do this season sneaks up on you. This post is just a reminder that cabinet orders are still at LEAST 4 weeks out. That means if your client wants new cabinets by that Holiday party they are planning, now is the time to act. In all honesty, 4 weeks doesn't seem like that far away, but actually, if you ordered your cabinets today a 4 week lead time puts your delivery the week AFTER Thanksgiving!!! Onyx Oak

I am normally the first person to steer a client away from oak cabinetry, but a new trend is making me double check myself.

Onyx stain on Oak cabinets is amazing. The depth of color and pattern bring out the oaks beautiful grain and help to use it as an accent rather than a distraction. Most of the time oak cabinets almost make your eye dizzy with all the grain and pattern. The onyx (black) stain helps to tone down the chaos. The grain becomes an accent piece almost like glaze. You end up with a cabinet full of depth and character rather than a flat black almost dull Maple look.

The best part of all this, the color is on OAK! Again, normally not something I would put in the pro column if doing a comparison, but oak is one of the least expensive woods to have cabinets built in. This new trend allows for redecorating on a budget...it doesn't get better than that!!!

It is hard to believe that Halloween is just around the corner, and the colder weather is just getting started. Happily things have been picking up here at Hicks, and we hope the same can be said for everyone. How to prepare for your new kitchen

Before you order:

1. Make sure you and your designer are on the same page as far as what you are envisioning in your mind. Pictures help a ton in this area, what you may think is cream, a designer may call yellow. Always show what you are thinking whenever possible.

2. Be in on all the desicions - it may get overwhelming and you will most likely get to a point where it is easier to say "just do what you think is best", rather than thinking about another option. At this point, stop and think. You are spending a lot of time and money on this renovation so do it the way you want it. Really think about every question that is posed to you...think about the answer now, and in 10 years from now.

3. Work with designer and installers that are there for you. Being on the same page with these people is key. You have to feel comfortable enough to ask any question at any time.

4. Find out your lead time - The shortest amount of time you can go without a kitchen is the best. Know how long the cabinets are going to take to come, and when the project is going to start.

After you order:

5. Prepare the install area - allow ample pathway for workers to enter and exit your home. Move anything that you would not want damaged. Workers are careful, but accidents happen, so it is better to be overprotecive of your furniture, art work and sentimental objects.

6. Have all kitchen accessories packed up and out of the way. Keep things you will need/use in a temporary kitchen space near a sink.

7. Remodeling means DUST. Keep everything covered.

8. Keep young children out of the work area for their safety, and have a clear cut idea of start and finish times.

9. Make sure everything is finished to your satisfaction & pay your contractor in a timely fashion. If there is something missing our something to be fixed, only hold back a fair amount. Holding $20,000 for a light switch cover is tough on a contractor who is there to do his job.

10. Enjoy your new kitchen!

Banishing winter by reflecting light

It is hard to worry about Winter when we are being hit with heat wave after heat wave, but the truth is that no matter how warm it is here now, Winter is coming. Granted, we have Autumn coming too, but that doesn't tye in with my post, so lets just skip over that season for now!!!

European design has always been popular accross the pond, but it is quickly become more and more relevant in the United States as well. In addition to the minimalist aesthetic often admired, designers and clients are starting to look at their use of white and pale colors to keep away the dark of winter. This "pop" of cheery color is starting to well, pop up all over this country too. Suggest using subtle colors like Debut's Blueberry or Sage to clients (http://www.debutcabinetry.com/). Subtle colors are neutral enough to go with anything. A trained eye can make them work, and give a client something that isn't run of the mill

Save Some $$$$$

Here are a few things that many kitchen designers find aren't really worth the expense:

1. Warming Drawers: Isn't this what the microwave is for? Microwaves are easier to use and much quicker.

2. Paste Spigots over Cook top: The pot is only going to get heavier once you add ingredients into it. If you don't think you can hold it with just water in it to get it to the stove, how are you going to empty it?

3. A Second Dishwasher: Unless you have a very large everyday family, a 2nd dishwasher is really not a necessity. If you are worried about that large party you are going to have, 2 dishwashers probably won't wash it all anyway!

4. A Double Oven: Thanksgiving is only once a year. Use the space more effectively the other 364 days!!!

Happy 4th of July!!! - a few days early!!!

Well, I was going to post this recipe on July 4th, but then I figured what would be the point? If any of you have parties to go to or are having them yourselves, you would be unable to include this amazing looking trifle if I waited. So here it goes...

Cook Time: 35 min
Level: Intermediate
Yield: 10 to 12 servings

Times:
Prep: 25 min
Inactive Prep: 1 hr 0 min
Cook: 35 min
Total: 2 hr 0 min

Ingredients:
1 box red velvet cake mix, about 18 ounces (if you can't find red velvet cake use 1 box chocolate cake plus a bottle of red food coloring)
1 (16-ounce) tub whipped topping
2 pints blueberries
1 pint strawberries, tops removed

Directions:
Bake the red velvet cake mix according to package directions and allow to cool.
Using a serrated knife cut the red velvet cake into 1 inch square pieces and line the bottom of the trifle bowl with half of the cake squares.
Using a spatula, spread about a 2-inch layer of whipped topping on top of the cake squares.
Layer about 1 1/2 pints of the blueberries on top of whipped topping.
Layer the remaining cake pieces on top of the blueberries forming a second layer of cake.
Using a spatula, spread remaining whipped topping over the cakes pieces.
Decorate the perimeter with the strawberries; placing the strawberries cut side down. Sprinkle the remaining blueberries on top of the trifle inside the strawberry perimeter.

The Cambria Dress

I have to say, that even though I love clothes and accessories, I never thought the day would come when that fun hobby would intersect my work as a kitchen designer. I have done many posts on the functionality of Cambria quartz for kitchen and bath counter tops, but this new use for the material has got me very excited!

At Fashion Week El Paseo 2010 in Palm Desert, California, Cambria showed off its newest addition to the line...the Cambria Dress. Composed of mostly natural quartz products, the dress was created by Christopher Straub, a contestant from Project Runway's Season 6. It features hundreds of semi-circular quartz tiles in four different Cambria colors - Minai, Waverton, Talbot Gray, and Snowdon White - attached to a black canvas sheath.

I wonder if this is available at any of our distributors yet!!!

ISLANDS!!!

Let's face it, around this time of year, the only Islands most of us ore thinking about are sunny, warm, and relaxing. I on the other hand am thinking about the kind that are functional, spacious and design friendly are what is on my mind.

Islands are pretty much a staple in any newly remodeled kitchen, and I am often bombarded with clearance questions. How much room do I need to walk around?, How much room do I need for seating?...
Lyn Peterson, author of Real Life Kitchens, has this advice for minimum clearances around an island...

Allow at least:
30-34 inches between the island and cabinetry with no appliances. if
you don't have enough space, you might consider installing shallower cabinets
along one wall to create more room.
37 inches minimum between the island and sink; 39-42 inches is ideal.
In main traffic ways or walls with appliances, allow more space - 42-48 inches
between island and wall. Be sue to allow space to open refrigerator or
dishwasher door and still have room for people to pass.
If you have seating at the island, you'll also need to allow space to pull
out stools; Jennifer Howard recommends at least 48 inches clearance on the
seating side.
"The island does not have to be centered in the kitchen". It can gravitate closer to the cooking area, creating a narrower aisle, to discourage guests
and children from taking that route through the space. "Islands and
peninsulas should buffer the cooking zone and segregate it from the non-cooks,
keeping the hoi polloi on the far side of the island".

These are not set in stone, but they do offer an industy standard that functions well, and allows for peace of mind.

Why Professional Kitchen Design is Important

On paper a kitchen seems like several boxes put next to each other that form a simple or complex design. More over, watching someone who has been designing kitchen for years design yours on a computer program looks so simple. So why should you invest the time and money to takes to have a design professional work on your kitchen?

My first thought is "Well, because it is not as easy as it looks." but WHY? is my next.

1. We know trends: It is our job, and often our passion to know what is new and what is up and coming. We sit down with our clients to talk to them about every aspect of their kitchen. We can help guide clients to a new kitchen that will not only be beautiful today, but that will stand the test of time.

2. We know design: It's the little things that matter. It seems simple enough, but all those boxes on the page won't work in anyone else's kitchen but the one we design it for. Inches and half-inches matter here, and hiring a designer allows you the freedom to worry about styles, colors, and function rather than feet and inches. A professional designer knows what will fit and why. We have a mental list of flags to look for in every kitchen design.

3. We take responsibility: I have alluded to this is the other 2 areas, but it really is important. Trust your designer to be responsible for his/her design. If something is off or something doesn't work, that issue is theirs. What if you design your own kitchen and put your refrigerator next to the wall with nothing but wall next to it. When your new refrigerator comes and you slide it into the space it fits in (hopefully) is the door going to open all the way? Are the pull out trays going to pull out if the door won't fully extend? Wouldn't it be nicer to not have this situation happen or if for some reason it did, you not to have to think about the cost to fix it. The fact of the matter is, it is not impossible for a non kitchen designer to design his or her own kitchen, but it is not what they do everyday, and learning every nuance in one design is close to impossible. A novice kitchen design is bound to have a hiccup or two in it, and for the amount of money you are spending, is that really something you are willing to compromise?

The Center for Woman's Health of Lansdale

This is an office area that is outfitted in both Fieldstone and Debut cabinetry. Each patient room has a base and wall cabinet with top, as well as the nurses station and reception area. Choices of wood for Cabinetry...

Here are some of the characteristics of the basic cabinetry woods, and some design tips to help out:

OAK: Heavy, hard and strong wood. Ranges in color from white to reddish brown. Coarse texture and open grain which varies from vertical to sweeping.

tip:Takes light to dark stains well and is ideal for traditional style kitchens. Can be quarter-sawn for a cleaner vertical grain.

MAPLE: Closed grain wood with a smooth texture. Ranges in color from creamy white to reddish brown. Hard, tough and resistant to shock.

tip: Does not take darker stain well. Ideal for light to medium tone stains and painted finishes for a clean uncluttered look.

CHERRY: Closed, richly grained wood with smooth texture and reddish tone. Reddish color darkens with age and exposure to natural light producing deep, rich finish.

tip: Versatile finish palette. Light stains perfect for a craftsman-style look and darker stains can create a rich, elegant setting.

ALDER: Smooth texture and pleasing grain. Very similar grain and color to cherry with less red tones. Contains characteristic small knots and pin holes.

tip: Takes all stains very well. Knotty variety can create a rustic look. Clear variety offers a less expensive alternative to Cherry.

LYPUTS: An eco-friendly alternative because it is renewable and sustainable. It has a closed grain, slightly coarse texture with a pale pink to tan color.

tip: Takes all stains well. It resembles Mahogany wood. Ideal for a warm kitchen, home office, media center, or built in furniture piece.

A New Look!

I was recently inspired by one of my dear friends to give our blog a little face lift. She has recently tweeked hers, and it gave it a boost of excitement. With that in mind, I have changed ours up a little bit. I am still looking into adding a few elements that I find interesting on other blogs, but don't know how to do yet. I think all in all, the changes are fun and exciting.

Kitchen Cabinet Corner Options

Lets face it, the corner space in the kitchen is not the easiest area to design with both form and function in mind. Most corner cabinets look nice, but really don't give you the maximum storage out of the given area. On the other hand, there are the cabinets that maximize storage space, but are not that easy to use.

Truth be told, a few years ago, I would have shuddered to put anything but a revolving corner base (lazy susan) in any kitchen. Time has passed though, and the options for blind corner bases have multiplied. I am now finding myself almost WANTING to put them in a design. Here are a few fun options that make blind corners more visually stimulating and well as functionally fun...

On the flip side, there are still great ideas for the "lazy Susan" type corner cabinet as well...s

And now there are even drawers to put in the corner. Not the best maximization of space, but they look very pretty!

So long story short, there seems to be a perfect fit corner cabinet for every request...for now at least. It does seem that cabinet manufacturers, and cabinet mechanical suppliers have really started to take notice of this corner issue, and are designing better cabinets that maximize form and function.

"What is your square foot price"?

This seems to be a question that is coming up more and more lately. It is apparent that the "box" stores are quoting kitchens to perspective clients in these terms to eliminate to time and expense of having a designer sit with customers, and to make it a bit more difficult to get a competitive quote.

In my opinion, buying cabinets by the square foot is like buying a car by weight. It really has no bearing on the quality or options that the lines offers you. It is just a bottom line number. Sure, a $40,000 BMW is a nice a car, but a $65,000 one might actually be what you were looking for. Are you reallying getting what you want out of cabinets for $25.00 a square foot. Better yet, do you even know what you are getting? Are you getting dovetail drawers, full extension runners, roll out trays, cutlery dividers, or are you getting the bare-bones cabinets to get you the lowest price they can give?

Were Legos really THAT important?

To me, building a kitchen is a lot like playing with Legos. There is a lot of twisting, turning, putting together and taking apart before the design is complete, let alone installed. That is why when I heard this response to a very common questions, I was bothered with my own stubbornness not to have thought of it, but enlightened with the answer itself.

I am often asked, " What is the difference between your Semi-custom and Full Custom cabinetry lines? and "Why does full custom cost more than Semi Custom"? The answer it seems, boils down to Legos!!!

If you were to go to the toy store and buy a basic Lego building block set, you would spend $19.99.

This set would allow you to build a nice house (or kitchen) but many modifications or stand out pieces are not available. If you wanted to modify a piece itself, it would take time (or money) to make that change.

Now, if you are to buy the Master set for $49.99,

more options are available with out modification charges. You can build a much larger house (or kitchen) with more options and variations built in. Modifications can still be made, but the need for them is less.

What is my Remodeling Budget?

2 weeks ago, I wrote a post about setting a budget for your kitchen remodel. After getting some great feed back on that post, I realized most customers don't know HOW to set a budget, or where to start.

We have found this to be a helpful budget calculator to find what a good budget for you kitchen remodel might be:

Most homeowners will spend 15% of their homes value on a kitchen remodel.

Of that number:

35% gets spent on Cabinetry

11% on Counter tops

12% on Appliances

9% on Lighting

3% on Drywall

7% on Flooring

3% on Plumbing

20% on Labor

Using this formula, redoing a kitchen in an estimated $500,000 home should cost about $75,000.

$26,250 will be spent on Cabinets

$8,250 on Counter tops

$9,000 on Appliances

$6,750 on Lighting

$2,250 on Drywall

$5,250 on Flooring

$2,250 on Plumbing

$15,000 on Labor

Obviously this is a standard formula and it can be tweaked in either direction, but it does give homeowners and contractors a great starting point. Customers can always go above budget or below, but it is important to try to stick to the value of the house in terms of re-sale. If you put more money into the kitchen than your budget allows you MAY not get that back out when you go to sell your home. Vice Versa, if you but less into a kitchen remodel, you many not get as much back at re-sale either because the new buyers may need to spruce it up.

All in all, you need to make you kitchen your own. Personal touches here and there add depth and character to you kitchen. Even if you plan to sell your home soon. Make sure the kitchen is a space you are happy in. Most of the time, that will translate into others being happy there too!

"Where do we start?"

When remodeling your kitchen, it seems like a logical enough question to ask. The answer however, is not so straight forward, do you start by picking the cabinets, or do you pick the floor first? Are counter tops the most important, or are appliances. The honest answer, is that does not lie with the products at all...

Where you truly start is with a budget. I know many home owners are leery of contractors, and hesitate to give out specifics on their budget, truth be told, a budget really helps a contractor to allow a homeowner to afford the kitchen they are looking for.

I often get asked both at work and with friends/family what kitchen cabinets cost. This is a tough question to answer. We have bought cabinets for kitchens that cost $1,500.00 and we have bought cabinets for kitchens that cost $65,000; the average falls somewhere in the middle. Setting a budget for a project and telling your contractor allows him to funnel your ideas into a logical expectation.

Creating a budget also allows you to reel yourself in. It is very easy in ANY project to add $500 here and $500 there. On big ticket items, it doesn't seem like that much at the time, but it adds up quickly. Having a budget allows you to know the minimum and maximum you can spend. The last thing you want to do is over extend yourself.

AFTER a budget is set, you can start to choose your tangible objects. As for what comes first here, that is up to the customer. Most customers go straight for the outside look of the cabinets. Some have set in their mind what they are looking for INSIDE the cabinets. There is no right or wrong choice to this aspect of your kitchen. Whatever is most important to you is what you should choose first. What do you look for when you go into someon else's home? Do you look at the cabinets first, or the counters, the appliances, or the floor. Pick what you notice first, because you want that to be what you love in your new space.

Our Enkeboll Displays...

Well, as most of you know, we have had a couple displays in our showroom waiting for Enkeboll crown to be placed on them. I have to say that they really haven't complained too much about not being finished, I on the other hand have not been so kind. John did an excellent job of installing all the cabinetry in the showroom, but was a bit stand offish when it came to cutting this molding. I guess when it runs about $100/foot, you measure 50 times and then measure again!

Our friend and business associate volunteered to "help" John cut the molding. It ends up that Herb did most of the cutting - which I think John was 100% OK with - and the vanity area is now complete.

It is really amazing how this 1 piece of molding can make such impact in this small area. The mirror will be hung soon, and the display will be finished. That is sure to mean I will be ready to rip it out and put a new one in very soon!!!

2010 Price Changes & Promotions

Well, as is always the case, cabinets manufacturers will be raising prices in January of 2010. This has been a helpful resource for us as we are trying to close some end of the year sales. Increases are normally only 3-5%, but why pay that if you don't have to.

Also, Fieldstone has been running many promotions that will also be ending in January...glaze and door style discounts will be coming to an end January 15, 2010, and the Inset cabinetry promotion will be ending January 31, 2010.

If you need any modified numbers from me, please do not hesitate to ask. We are also asking all of our customers to let us know if there is anything they would like to see us do differently next year. Well, we have stumbled into December, and it is getting harder to find new product launches, as everyone seems to be gearing down for the cold winter days ahead.

GE however, has just come out with the SINGLE-DOUBLE OVEN. Truthfully, I think this oven is a great idea. More and more clients are coming in with magazines and books showing 25'x25' kitchens that "have it all". The truth is most kitchens are not that size, and fitting a 48" refrigerator, a 36" cook top, a double wall oven, microwave, warming drawer and decorative range hood is not always possible. This oven offers your client a way to get a decorative range hood AND a double oven in a smaller more efficient space. I know that this has not been the most productive year for many of us, so as you sit around your Thanksgiving Table this year, you may find yourself straining to list all the wonderful things to be thankful for.

As I think about it, I think that we at Hicks have a lot to be thankful for...

Our customers have helped us grow as both a company and as individuals. Learning more and more about out fields has turned out to be fun rather than work. We have established relationships with our customers that are built on trust and loyalty, and for that we are very grateful.

Even though we are not as busy as we have been in the past several years, our customers have brought us very challenging and different projects that have kept us on our toes and up on our product knowledge.

We have even met new customers this year that have joined with us to grow both their companies and ours.

Looking forward I think it should be a fabulous 2010!!!

While I was out to dinner this weekend, I was perusing over the wine list...not knowing what goes with what, I settled on my regular Chianti. After thinking about it, I decided that I needed to get a bit more cultured and learn what I should be drinking with what. It is in this vein, that this post formed. Considering all wine drinkers drink wine in the kitchen (at some point), what wine goes with the kitchen you have?

CLASSIC WHITE:

PINOT GRIGIO: A classic white kitchen is like any poultry or veal dish, they can be served simple or spicy. Most white kitchens rely on walls and accent pieces for color. This kitchen shows how all white can be striking with very sparing accent color.

Wine Selection: Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio

ASIAN INSPIRED:

CABERNET SAUVIGNON: The Asian-inspired style of this kitchen can only make me think of sushi and egg rolls. Sitting at the bar area having lunch would require a bold, dry Cabernet to go with it. The simple style and clean lines of the kitchen make it seem functional and complete.

Click on the picture above, to take a look at the home of Julianne Moore. I like the open shelving in the office, although, I could NEVER keep my books that neat. I also love the bathroom. The kitchen is beautiful, although a bit to modern for the overall asthetic of the room. That is only my opinion though. What do you think?

I know everyone is trying to save some money this winter, so with that in mind, I found this article and thought it was a good one to share. Not only can going green help the enviornment, it can save us some money too!

With the increasing amount of news stories about living a 'greener', more 'eco-friendly' life, it is easy to get lost in all the information given about this topic. Fear not, it is easier than you think to become more 'green', and at the same time, save some extra cash to spend on the things that are worth spending money on.

By using simple steps, it is clear to see how you can save money on your heating, electric and water bills. The following steps will show you how you can join the increasing amount of people who are living a more 'greener', more 'eco-friendly' lifestyle.

Easy ways to save electricity:
Turn TV's, DVD players, games consoles off at the plug when not in use. Some appliances use up to 90% of their power when on standby, so switch them off at the plug to save electricity and money. Line dry clothes to save energy from your tumble drier. Tumble driers are the second biggest energy user in the home after the fridge.
If the weather is poor, you can always use a clotheshorse to dry your
clothes.

Use energy efficient lighting around the home. Although energy efficient lighting seems expensive at present, energy efficient light bulbs can last up to 10 times longer, and use only 25% of energy used by standard lighting. In the long run, the bulbs will pay for themselves.

Easy ways to save water:
By turning taps off when shaving and when brushing your teeth, you can save
at least 6 litres of water per minute. If your taps leak, you could be wasting
up to 5,500 litres of water per year, so always replaced your taps faulty
washers.

Storing water in the fridge will stop you running the tap for long periods to get cold water. Switch to watering the garden with a watering can. You can water your plants directly at the base so that the water goes straight to their roots, not on the leaves. Remember to water your plants in the evening to reduce evaporation.

Easy ways to save heat:
Turning your thermostat down by 1 degree, you can save up to 10% on your heating bill each year.

Use energy saving window blinds to help trap warm air inside the home in cold weather, and direct sunlight out during hot weather. These types of blinds are around the same price as standard blinds, and can help you save money on your heating bills. Why would anyone want to waste money on blinds that increase your heating bill?

A TOUCH OF ITALY: One trend in kitchen design is to mix wood finishes or colors, using contrast to draw special attention to different zones in the kitchen. Here an Italian-inspired hutch outfitted with a microwave, coffee bar, and small sink defines a distinct breakfast area between the kitchen and the butler's pantry.... Painted a dark green that's nearly black and highlighted with silver leaf, the hutch anchors the kitchen's heirloom feeling, which results from a mix of woods and furniture-style cabinetry. Woods include cherry for the island, a mahogany "armoire" for the refrigerator (not seen), and butternut cabinetry around the perimeter.

I just went out to measure for some Laundry Room and Bar Cabinets in a previous customer's home. I was so excited to finally get to see the kitchen we worked on a while back. As I sit at my desk listening to my iPod, trying to get some kitchen layouts processed, it occurs to me that there is a correlation between cabinets and music. The more I think about it, I have rarely been to a job site where some sort of music wasn't being played while the cabinets we being installed, if I call down to the plant where the cabinets are made, there is always music on as well. So, maybe the craftsmen working with these cabinets have been privy to this information for years, and I am just now catching on!!! So here is my playlist of cabinet choices and colors...I hope you like the mix!!!

"White Shadows" Coldplay:

White cabinets can be simple & complicated. The most common whites you find are tinted varnishes on maple, but European design go high gloss, which are much more modern. Painted white finishes bring you many design ideas, and finish opportunities. Tinted Varnish whites can be distressed, glazed, low sheen, etc...they can basically be customized to your taste. A classic white kitchen is pictured here:

"Maplewood" Mary Flower:
Maple is a wood that offers the most versatility. Maple works well with almost everything, and is the go to wood choice for most remodels on a sensible budget. Maple can be both classic and contemporary, both light and dark, both structured and casual

"Cherry Oh, Baby" UB40:
Cherry is one of the most popular wood species on the market. Cherry ranges from natural to Bordeaux finishes. Recently the darker versions of this wood have been making a strong pull in the market. In my opinion, natural cherry is a beautiful wood, but it is not what most clients are thinking of when they tell me they are looking for a cherry kitchen. Most trade publications, and decorating magazines show the darker tones cherries , and therefore most clients request what they see. A Fieldstone Cherry Java cabinet door is shown below. This color tends to lend itself to a more modern or transitional look.

"Dreaming in Color" Jump5:
Color can completely personalize a kitchen, which ironically is why many people shy away from it. It can truly make a kitchen all your own, but for re-sale or longevity, it can be scary. Colors work in modern or traditional kitchens and are most often seen as an accent.

"Fade to Black" Metallica...
Black cabinets have started to get more and more popular in the past few years, especially as accent pieces, though you'll sometimes see a whole kitchen in black. If you have wood cabinets that you really dislike, painting them black can be an easy, affordable update. Black even shines over oak. The graining and patten work well with black paint. Adding a glaze to a black painted oak cabinet can really add huge interest to an otherwise tempermental finish.

Creating an eco-friendly kitchen is as simple as being smart about the materials you buy, and when possible, recycling, reusing, and repurposing items from all over the house.

CLEAR THE AIR: Use paint that is low in -- or free of -- volatile organic compounds. VOCs are gases, some of which can be toxic, that are emitted from products such as wall paint, paint stripper, cleaning supplies, and some building materials.

Stainless steel can be found on just about every design element in the kitchen these days. On cabinets, it’s typically formed around an inner core material to give it substance and keep it from sounding tinny. While you can get a very sleek look from stainless steel, it does show fingerprints and scratches.

A durable and sanitary material, stainless steel cabinets qualify as a "green product," as they are non-toxic, recyclable and easy to clean without the use of harsh chemicals. Stainless steel is also a top pick for people with chemical sensitivities.As an added bonus, all-stainless cabinets are a great pick for outdoor kitchens, as they withstand the elements (humidity included) quite well.Don't write off the stylish material as purely the stuff of modern spaces. Consider combining it with a Transitional cabinet, like a cherry Arts & Crafts-style door, for a tempered contemporary look.
